AN ARSONIST given an anti-social behaviour order for starting small fires in Burnley breached his ASBO the same day.

Lionel Hawke, 25, was given the order at Reedley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, but within hours he had already breached it by carrying a lighter.

Hawke, of Constable Avenue, Burnley, was given the interim ASBO for his behaviour in Burnley Wood and Rosehill between January 8 and May 30.

Police said he had caused harassment, alarm or distress to people in the area, used foul and abusive language towards them, and hie intimidated or threatened residents, including children, by lighting and encouraging others to light fires.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “I encourage residents to contact us if they see anyone committing anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood.

“The police and the council will not tolerate this type of behaviour and we will continue to take action to tackle any issues which are raised in the future.

“We are committed to working with residents to address anti-social behaviour and will continue to take action against those who make the lives of others a misery.”

Hawke’s order banned him from entering parts of Rosehill and Burnley Wood and from carrying any accelerants or materials including lighters, lighter fluid and matches that could be used to light a fire in a public place.

A full order has been applied for and he will appear before Reedley Magistrates on Wednesday.
