AN eBay investigation has seen bidding on a section of Ewood Park turf drop from nearly £1million to £160,000.

Blackburn Sunday league team manager Eddie Maxwell is selling the penalty spot from the Darwen End of Blackburn Rovers’ pitch.

It was made famous as the spot where Wayne Rooney scored Manchester United’s 19th championship-winning goal last month.

Bosses at the auction website today stepped up the pressure on bidders that had seen the price rocket yesterday.

An eBay spokesman said: “We have been in touch with the seller today to offer our help in managing any over-enthusiastic bidding.

“Every bidder has been contacted and told to authenticate their bid directly with eBay.

"Those who did not were removed from the bid.

“People bidding on any auction items, including important bits of turf, should remember they are agreeing to buy the item at the price they bid."

Today the top bid remained at £161,100. There has been a total of 149 bids and more than 120,000 views of the lot.

The bidding has five days to run.
