THREE robbers burst into a woman's Burnley home and threatened her with a pickaxe.

The 22-year-old was in her flat, in Colne Road, about 11pm on Thursday when the men smashed a back window and broke in.

They demanded cigarettes before a passing police officer disturbed them.

The officer went to the door of the flat and was confronted by one of the intruders brandishing a pickaxe.

All three of the men then fled.

The woman was left shocked but unharmed by the incident.

Det Con Gary Williams, of Burnley CID, said: "Nothing was taken, but this was obviously a very scary incident for the lady involved.

"We are investigating the break-in at the flat during which the occupant was threatened. We would appeal for anyone who may have seen anyone in the area or any vehicles that may have looked out of place, to get in touch with us."

One resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard a commotion at the flat at about 11pm and added: "I heard the sound of breaking glass so went outside to see what was happening.

"I saw some men on the roof of the flat, but other than that I don't know what happened."

Anyone with information should call Det Sgt Ian Proctor on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
