ONE of Burnley's busiest roads was forced to close this morning after a vehicle crashed into a canal bridge.
The driver of the City West Housing Transit van had to be cut free from his vehicle near Sainsbury’s in Colne Way.
The accident happened shortly before 8am and the road was closed through rush hour to help emergency services get to the scene.
The man, said to be in his 30s, had veered off Colne Road into the stone walls of the bridge.
Firefighters strapped the driver to a stretcher before pulling him out of the back door of the van.
He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with neck and back injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
Fire crews secured the vehicle to prevent it falling into the canal.
The cause of the crash is still unclear, but firefighters believe it may have been caused by a vehicle defect.
