A MILL worker had to be taken to hospital after his hand became trapped in the machine on which he was working.

The 44-year-old man's hand became jammed in a paper winding machine at the Sappi Europe paper mill in Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn, yesterday morning.

Firefighters and an ambulance crew were called to the scene shortly before 9.30am, but fellow workers had already managed to prise the man free by the time they arrived.

He was given first aid at the scene before being taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he was treated for injuries to his hand.

He was discharged from the hospital later in the day.

A spokesman for the mill said that the man had not sustained any serious injuries.

He went on to say that the company, along with the Health and Safety Executive, would now be investigating how the accident had occurred.
