A PARTIALLY-sighted student has refused to let his disability get in the way of his dream of becoming a legal eagle.

The determined student in question is Deepak Asal, 18, of Wensley Road, Blackburn.

Despite having limited vision, Blackburn College student Deepak, gained As in law and sociology, and a B in psychology at A-level and a B at AS-level social science, To ensure his eyesight would not hinder his law ambitions, Deepak was offered support from college staff who helped with note taking during lectures and written materials were adapted so that he could take a full and active part in the A-level programme.

And Deepak said he was overjoyed after gaining four top A-levels and securing a place at Lancaster University, his first choice, where he will read law in October.

The former pupil of Beardwood High School, Blackburn said; "I am just so excited. I cannot wait to go to university in October. I have worked so hard and I am just delighted it has all paid off.

"Without the support I received at Blackburn College I would not have got through my A-levels and achieved the results I have. Blackburn College welcomed me with open arms and were not put off by my disability."

Ann Harwood, additional learning support manager, said; "We are delighted with Deepak's success.

"We strive to offer excellent student support and endeavour to continuously improve on providing the best practice in inclusive education."

The college was graded outstanding by Ofsted in January 2004 for its educational and social inclusion.
