A WOMAN smashed and thrust a glass into a friend's face during a drinking get together.

Victim Susan Morrison, seen covered in blood, asked a passer-by to help get Rose Lamont out of her address in Formby Close, Blackburn.

The defendant had gone round there for a drink before an argument later broke out.

The injured woman sustained a cut under an eyebrow in the violence.

Lamont, 53, was given 26 weeks prison, suspended for two years, with two years supervision by the probation service.

The defendant, of Poole Street, Blackburn had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The two women had been friends for over 20 years prior to the assault. Their families were linked by marriage.

David Macro, prosecuting at Preston Crown Court, said the two women sat chatting and having a drink, when something was said.

Lamont then stood up, smashed a wine glass and pushed the glass towards the other woman's left eye.

Susan Morrison was covered in blood, said the prosecution.

Karl Berry, defending, said the out of character behaviour may have been caused by the disinhibiting effects of alcohol and an increased dosage of medication.

Judge Norman Wright told Lamont: "I am satisfied it was a combination of excessive drinking, which you are not used to, and an increase in medication that meant you acted in a way that was totally uncharacteristic of you."
