MOTORISTS are being urged to take care on the roads after forecasters predicted gusts of up to 80mph.

The Met Office has issued an amber wind alert, predicting 'a period of exceptionally windy weather'.

Forecasters said that gusts could reach as high as 80mph in some exposed areas but wind speed could be at least 60mph on other roads.

Following the warning the Highways Agency has urged all motorists, especially those travelling on motorways and exposed roads, to take extra care and find alternative routes if possible.

The Met Office has said the winds were expected to ease from the west by evening and they should drop down to around 49mph at its peak tomorrow(tues) with dry sunny conditions throughout the day.
