COLNE and Nelson residents are being urged to have their say over whether they want town councils.

Pendle Borough Council is exploring the possibility of setting up a town council for Nelson and another for Colne.

Letters about the town council plan have been sent out to residents along with electoral registration forms delivered to homes by canvassers.

And residents are being reminded they have until September 11 if they want to submit their views on the town council idea.

Coun Tonia Barton, chairman of the scrutiny panel set up to lead the parish review, said early indications were that people supported the proposals but it was important everyone had their say.

She added: "Through straw polls we've conducted, we found that local people were four to one in favour of the proposals.

"However, we felt it important to give everyone the opportunity to let us know their views.

"They can do this very simply by returning the reply paid voting slip."

The authority's scrutiny management team and full council will meet in October to consider the feedback.
