A GROUP of young Indian footballers from the hometown of Blackburn Rovers owner Venky’s have had to cancel a trip to East Lancashire over visa problems.

The 17 youngsters, aged 11 to 17, from the city of Pune were due to spend eight days in the area in a tie-up with the club’s community trust.

But the All India Youth Football Academy group never made it to the UK after being turned back when the reached the airport in India.

However, community trust bosses said they hoped the trip could still take place later in the year.

Head of planning Duncan Kinloch said: “I understand that they were hoping to get visas and did not apply in time.

“They will still come but it will be later in the year instead, perhaps at the start of next season.”

Mr Kinloch’s team had lined up a full itinerary for their Indian guests, who were set to stay at the Avenue hotel near Rovers’ Brockhall training ground.

The youngsters were due to watch Rovers’ clash with Manchester United, Wigan Athletic take on West Ham United and Manchester City’s midweek game against Stoke City.

They were also set to compete in games against teams from Lammack Juniors, Blakewater College and Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School.

However, they were cancelled at the last minute.

Mr Kinloch added: “It was disappointing, especially for the kids involved, but it will happen at some point.

“I am sure they will sort their visas out in good time next time.”

The All India Youth Football Academy is based in Pune, near Mumbai, where Venky’s has its head office.

It is unclear how much of a role the Indian club owners played in organising the trip.

Venky’s was unavailable for comment.
