A DARWEN councillor who highlighted a growing solvent abuse problem in the town today welcomed action to combat the menace.

And Sudell ward Coun Roy Davies pledged to carry on tackling anti-social behaviour in the area.

Last week the Telegraph reported how increasing numbers of butane canisters were being found behind gargages in Higher Perry Street.

So authorities carried out test purchases in five shops around the area, checking to see if any of the solvent-based products were being sold to children, as part of a crackdown.

Coun Davies said: "Residents around the area are afraid that one day they won't find canisters behind the garages but they will find a body."

Solvent abuse can cause death and holds risks such as fatal heart problems, nausea, vomiting, severe headaches and blackouts. Long-term effects of solvent abuse include brain damage, and kidney or liver failure.

But the Lib Dem member added: "I welcome this action. Hopefully we are managing to stop this problem but there are many more problems to be tackled before I'll rest.

"The area has a problem with youths, it is an ideal place for them. The lighting is poor so youths hang around and trees give them extra coverage.

"People have elected me and I also live in the area. What effects them effects me. I'm here to do something about this.

"I have proposed that lighting be improved and street lighting installed and to do something about the trees. Also it has been suggested that anti-vandal paint be used to stop people climbing and hopefully the area will be looked after.

"I want to know if I will get support to carry out these changes.
