A ROSSENDALE school is one of the applicants hoping to win a franchise to broadcast local TV services.

Alder Grange Community Technology School, in Rawtenstall, has put together a plan to run a local station on the back of Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s hopes to create a network of as many as 80 local TV stations in the UK.

David Heywood, head of creative, expressive and performing arts, said: “We are really keen to be part of the process and believe we could be an ideal base for a local TV station.

“It is a very exciting prospect and one that we are really serious about pursuing.

“The government wants to create new channels dedicated to providing local news and content which is precisely what we would be aiming to provide.”

“We can offer a truly local TV service, producing local news and features with a real local slant.

“We have the technology at our disposal and the station would also offer a wonderful environment for students to learn the kind of skills that will be useful for them in the years ahead.”

The competition for various local TV franchises takes place from June 2011 with the first licences awarded in summer 2012.
