A FORMER councillor who was prominent on the local football scene has died aged 85.
Frank Clayton represented the Brownhill ward during the 1970s.
His election, in September 1970 for the Independent Ratepayers’ Association, was a shock for the ruling Conservative group as it cost them their overall majority on Blackburn Council.
The Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School student, of Hickory Street, Blackburn, played football for Old Blackburnians and founded Oozebooth FC.
The lifelong Rovers fan, who also worked at the Lancashire Telegraph, was also a semi-professional referee and secretary of Blackburn Football Combination.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hilda, and son Roger.
Long-serving Mill Hill councillor Malcolm Doherty, who remembers Frank from his refereeing days, said: “I knew him as a bloke who gave lots of his time to the local community.”
