A FORMER derelict site has been transformed into a ‘green park’ in Burnley’s historic Weavers’ Triangle quarter.

New grassed areas, pathways and seating have been created in Sandygate Square, and on the site of the former Clock Tower Mill, between Queen’s Lancashire Way and Trafalgar Street.

The previously derelict area has been brought back to life thanks to Burnley Borough Council, the Prince’s Trust, the National Grid and British Waterways.

Coun Martin Smith, executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “I commend the hard work and passion of the partn-ership volunteers who have worked hard to create this wonderful new space for people to enjoy, bringing this historic area of Burnley back to life.

“These works are a major part of the council’s efforts to improve the Weavers’ Triangle for existing businesses in the area, as well as attracting new businesses to this priority regeneration site.”

A programme of events and community arts activities is being developed with funding from the Arts Council England to bring the new public square alive.

Artists and community groups are currently being invited to submit tenders for inspiring activities and art which will animate the area and attract people to the square.

Proposals can include performing arts, music, film and visual art, reflecting Burnley’s past, present and future.
