A LANDMARK mill is to be demolished to make way for 134 new homes after plans were given the green light.

Councillors rubber-stamped the proposal to carry out the work on the site of Reedyford Mill, Nelson, on Tuesday night, bringing an end to a long-running saga.

Developers AFK Nelson Ltd had originally wanted to build 156 houses and create 237 parking spaces on the land, off Pendle Street, behind Morrisons.

But the firm was sent back to the drawing board after residents, particularly those in Westfield Road, raised concerns over an increase in traffic.

Pendle Council’s development management committee approved the proposal in line with planning officers’ recommendation.

Coun Mohammed Iqbal, who is not on the committee but attended the meeting, welcomed the decision.

Speaking after the hearing, he said: “I’m pleased with the outcome and that the developers can move forward with the plans while working with local people as well.

“It will rejuvenate the area and complement the buildings that are already there.

“There is a strong community spirit in the area and I hope that will be enhanced when these houses are built.”

The Reedyford Mill site is made up of several buildings, some of which date back to the 1880s.

Under a legal agreement, the developers must contribute £30,000 towards the creation of a pedestrian and cycle link between the tow path and footway, north of Scotland Road. Another £6,000 must be put forward for a travel plan advice and preparation scheme in the area.
