A VILLAGE primary school is going to be wired for sound as part of an ambitious £475,000 makeover.

And youngsters will be at one with nature once works at Hapton CE Methodist school, in Manchester Road, are completed.

Headteacher Jacqui Clarke and governors have drawn up improvements to three main areas of the Victorian-era school after receiving funding from the county council under the Primary Capital Programme (PCP).

Plans also include the creation of a new mini-radio station which would be staffed, in part, by the 90 pupils there.

Mrs Clarke said: “We are really excited by what will be be happening. We are going to be upgrading our computer facilities across the school, as well as a new radio station.”

Two existing classrooms, for Early Years and Key Stage One pupils, will be the focus for the upgrades, following the remodelling of a toilet block.

The base for the youngest pupils will be reconfigured so that it opens out onto the playground, expanding educational opportunities outdoors.

While PCP provided £375,000 of the total funding, another £105,000 was provided by the school through its reserves and grants.

Similar work has also been undertaken at a number of primary schools in the Hapton and Padiham areas.

An overhaul costing £433,000 is planned for St John the Baptist Primary and Padiham Green CE Primary was another £1million beneficiary last year.

Work on the scheme should begin, once tenders have been received and evaluated, at the start of April, with an October finish envisaged.
