NEW sports facilities for youngsters in Brierfield have been officially unveiled.

The new Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) off Elland Road, are marked out with pitches for basketball, cricket and football.

Volleyball can also be played there, provided players bring their own posts and a net.

The new MUGAs have been built on the former site of Mansfield School’s tennis courts.

They have been created after a land swap agreement between Pendle Council and Lancashire County Council (LCC) relating to the development of Benthead playing fields.

In 2007 it was agreed that, in exchange for the land at Benthead being developed for the new Marsden Heights Commun-ity College, Pendle Council could develop the former tennis courts of Mansfield School.

LCC provided £30,000 towards the MUGAs.

Mayor of Pendle Coun Tony Beckett and Mayor of Brierfield Coun Pauline Allen officially opened the site yesterday.

Pupils and teachers from Walter Street Primary School and Marsden Heights Community College, who were consulted on designs for the MUGA, were also at the opening.
