A teacher who is inspired by pupils’ curiosity about how things work has been hailed as one of the best science teachers in the country.

Helen Hewitson, 42, of Shadsworth Junior School, Blackburn, creates quirky lessons to get children interested in the subject.

Kicking off lessons with ‘wow’ objects such as a ping pong ball that lights up, she also comes up with elaborate projects like a fictitious allotment association wanting help with chosing the best waterproofing material.

This has now resulted in the Helen, of Barrowford, being awarded a pharmaceutical company’s award.

Helen, who has been teaching for four years after retraining following 14 years working at a cash and carry, where she was a regional manager, was chosen for AstraZeneca’s Keith Bishop Award.

She was picked by judges for her excellent classroom practice, commitment, enthusiasm and expertise.

Helen, who was awarded Advanced Skills Teacher status after two years and now teachers at other schools in the borough, said: “I am quite humbled.

“I don’t have a science background but I am passionate about the subject. Children’s curiosity about why and how things work makes science interesting.

“I love my work and seeing the children progress is wonderful. You can’t get this from any other job.”

She won £1,000 and £1,000 for the school.

Jenny Heatherington, the head at Shadsworth Junior School, said: “Helen is much admired by pupils, parents and teachers alike.”
