This was the dramatic scene above Pendle Hill as a giant hail cloud formed.
The image, captured by Lancashire Telegraph photographer John Mills on Monday, resulted from strong winds and freezing temperatures.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Hail forms in strong thunderstorms clouds, particularly those with intense updrafts, which will often be near mountains.”
