MEMENTOES belonging to a Clarets icon are set to become an integral part of a display dedicated to Burnley FC's first legendary team at Turf Moor.

Flying winger Edwin Mosscrop was a member of both the FA Cup winning side of 1914 and the all-conquering Championship outfit of 1920-21 but his career was cut short a year later due to illness.

So club historian Ray Simpson was determined to secure talismans from his exemplary career during an auction of football memorabilia at Bonham's in Chester.

And despite some hectic bidding, he managed to walk away with an England cap and medal from Mosscrop's two appearances for his country in 1914.

He was part of the side which beat Wales 2-0 at Ninian Park but tasted defeat a month later at the hands of Scotland, in a 3-1 loss at Hampden Park.

Another lot was secured, a commemorative medal from when the Southport-born player was selected for a representative match pitting the best of the English and Scottish leagues, in a match staged at Turf Moor the same year.

Mosscrop retired to his hometown in 1922 to work as a teacher and was the last surviving pre-World War One England international when he died in March 1980.

In his 176 appearances for the club, a career broken up military service in Salonika, he notched up 19 goals.

Mr Simpson said: "There were a number of items associated with Edwin at the auction, presumably put up for sale by members of his family.

"There was a winners medal and a shirt from the FA Cup final, but we had resigned ourselves to the fact that they were going to be sold for a serious amount of money."

The Turf Moor trophy cabinet already has the medals belonging to goalscorer Bert Freeman and goalkeeper Ronnie Sewell, along with the shirts worn by left-half Billy Watson and wing-half George Halley.

Mr Simpson added: "The reserves were a little misleading but we managed to pick up all our lots for between £3,000 and £4,000.

"We are adding to the collection all the time."

Other exhibits held at the Clarets museum include medals presented to Harry Potts, Andy Payton's golden boot from 1999-2000 and shirts from every era.
