BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw said former Rovers chairman John Williams did a ‘magnificent job’ at the club.

He said: “John Williams helped dig us out of the championship and ensured that Blackburn survived for one of the longest periods we’ve had in the top flight of football with very limited resources.

“I think the club, the fans and the area owe him a great debt.”

Looking ahead to the future of the club, he added: “I’ve got my fingers crossed. Football is a results business. John Williams leaves with great respect and admiration.

“I’ve never heard a bad word said about him.”

Former Blackburn with Darwen Council leader Mike Lee said John Williams’ legacy would be Rovers’ financial strength and growing young support.

The borough’s Conservative party leader is a season ticket-holder in the Riverside Stand.

He said: “I was a bit surprised when I heard he had gone.

“I think he has done a fantastic job in the last few years in keeping Rovers in a reasonably strong position, and keeping us financially sound as well.

“I think that's why we were attractive for a takeover because we didn't have huge debts.”

Coun Lee priased the reduction in ticket prices.

He said: “Dads and families and children have been able to go because the prices have been reasonable and the kids have got hooked, so they will keep coming back.

“I think that was really good marketing and Rovers will feel the benefit for years to come.

“Everybody connected with Rovers should be thanking him for all he has done over the years.”
