LEISURE centre charges could rise by 10 per cent and a public hall could close under proposed cutbacks in Pendle.

Swimming and exercise charges at the borough’s three leisure centres will definitely rise by five per cent from April 1.

And while a further 10 per cent increase has not been ruled out, trust officials favour the smaller hike.

An estimated £50,000 needs to be spent on health and safety work at Barrowford Civic Hall, in Maud Street. This has been recommended for closure, saving £11,260 annually.

Around £10,000 would be saved if Colne’s Great British Rhythm and Blues festival was axed, and £15,000 if the Manchester Camerata programme was discontinued.

But in a report to the borough council’s executive, which will consider the budget next Tuesday, the trust gives preference to saving the blues festival.

Phil Storey, Pendle Leisure Trust chief executive, said: “It will be down to councillors to make the final decision.”

Extra income from the Inside Spa health treatments wing, at Nelson’s Wavelengths Centre, a vacancies freeze and energy-saving initiatives will save just under £121,000.

Other options include reduced weekend or winter opening hours at leisure centres.

Another suggestion is bank holiday closures for West Craven Sports Centre, Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne and the Seedhill track near Nelson.
