THE family of a man who was killed in a suspected hit-and-run have paid tribute to their 'wonderful son, brother and friend'.

It comes as police arrested a 46-year-old man from Hyde, Cheshire, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Michael Isherwood, 36, a boatmaster, died on Monday after his bike was struck by a car as he was riding to work along Kelbrook Road in Barnoldswick.

In a statement, his devastated parents Ken and Ivy Isherwood said: "He was kind, thoughtful and generous with his time, always ready to do anything for anyone. He worked hard and took real pride in his job, which he loved.

“Michael loved life and was enthusiastic about so many things. He loved being outdoors and was a gifted runner and cyclist. He could turn his hand to any DIY job and was enjoying doing up his house. Above all, he loved spending time relaxing with his friends and family.

"He always had so much energy and it was a joy to be around him.

“Michael was well loved by everyone who knew him and so many people will be devastated by his loss. We are lucky to have so many wonderful memories of him – his life was short, but he lived every minute of it to the full.”

Mr Isherwood worked for Foulridge Canal Cruises, at The Waterhouse, Canal Wharf, Foulridge, and was at the helm of the barge during Prince Charles' visit to Burnley.

His boss Martin Cleaver said: "The arrest is a positive move. The family is in limbo at the moment. Michael’s older brother David who lives in London has been told and is in shock. There are a lot of people that can’t believe what’s happened. Michael was very popular.”

Karrie Almond, 50, has lived in Meadow Way and known the Isherwood family for 18 years.

She said: “I've known Michael since he was a boy. He was a lovely, hard working lad, who just lived for his hobbies."
