EAGER AFC Darwen boss Kenny Langford wants the people of the town to turn out in force on Tuesday to cheer the Salmoners on in their biggest game since reforming.
Langford leads Darwen into Lancashire Challenge Trophy action against Evo-Stik First Division North leaders Chorley – and can’t wait for the Anchor Ground clash with the Magpies as former Blackburn Rovers star Garry Flitcroft arrives in town.
Magpies’ boss Flitcroft has assembled a powerful squad, including ex-Rover Matt Jansen, and Langford knows it is a tough test for his Vodkat League First Division outfit.
But he says the Darwen fans could make a big difference.
“It’s a great game for us,” said Langford. “But it’s a tough one.
“Chorley are a really good side as their results show, they have some cracking players and it will be great for my lads up against them.
“Most of my team have not played at this level before so it will be a good experience – and as most of them are Rovers fans they will want to put one over a couple of their heroes like Garry and Matt.”
Darwen played host to the Magpies in a pre-season game that finished 1-1 but Langford admits that result means nothing ahead of Tuesday’s game.
“After that match Garry shook my hand and told me that my lads played some good football,” he added.
“I actually hope he rests some of his guys because I think their first team might just want to go out and get revenge for that draw back in August.”
Darwen have made a solid start to life back in the Vodkat League after their elevation from the West Lancs League.
And while ex-Old Blackburnians boss Langford is enjoying the experience, he admits it is a constant battle.
“I am enjoying it but it can be hard work,” he said.
“We have a few players missing but I think we will have a good team when they all come back.
“The difference between us and Chorley is they have spent money on players while we are scratching around for petrol expenses.
“Hopefully a decent crowd next week will boost the coffers as well.”
