The Sands Centre’s International Orchestral Concert Series 2010-2011 begins with the welcome return of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio. Newsquest Northwest has teamed up with The Sands Centre to promote this great competition to our readers. Enter now for your chance to win one of three pairs of tickets to the performance, plus a show programme.
Internationally recognised as one of Russia’s most prestigious and versatile orchestras, the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1930. Until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the orchestra was the official orchestra of the Soviet Radio Network. Over the years, a distinguished group of composers, guest conductors and soloists have played an integral role in the development of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In 1993 the Orchestra was renamed by the decree of the Russian Ministry of Culture and became the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio. Awarding the orchestra the name of this great Russian composer was recognition of the orchestra’s role in promoting much of the music written by Tchaikovsky.
Conducting the Carlisle performance will be Terje Mikkelsen, who became Music Director in January 2009 after working with the orchestra since 1993. Before working with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Terje Mkkelsen was the principal conductor of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra since 1999.
Joining the orchestra is the distinguished Russian Violinist, Alena Baeva. The 24 year old is one of the most powerful talents of her generation, and has already won the prestigious Wieniawski competition in Poznan (2001). Alena also won the Grand-Prix at the Moscow Paganini (2004) and the Gold Medal in Sendai, Japan (2007).
The evening’s programme consists of Svendsen’s Carnival In Paris, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2.
Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio commence their performance at 7.30pm on Friday, October 22, 2010. Tickets cost £30, £29 and £28 and concessions are available from the Box Office on 01228 625222 or online at www.thesandscentre.co.uk .
