A SHELTERED housing scheme in Brierfield will close its doors after bosses felt it was no longer fit for purpose.
Residents at O’Hagan Court, off Stanley Street, will be moved into alternative accommodation before next summer.
The decision was made after a consultation with residents and discussions at the last Housing Pendle board meeting.
The remaining eight bung-alows next to O’Hagan Court will be fully improved with new kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems.
O’Hagan Court comprises of 40 flats, of which almost half are currently empty.
Bosses at Housing Pendle said the O’Hagan Court scheme, which was considered state-of-the-art when it was built in the 1970s, is now unable to meet the modern day living requirements and aspirations of older people.
A spokesman for Housing Pendle said: “Before next summer, the people who currently live in O’Hagan Court will be given individual support and first choice for re-housing into more modern and suitable homes of their choice.
“They will also receive statutory homeless payment of £4,700 and on top of that all moving and associated costs will be met.
"Once empty, O’Hagan Court will be demolished and landscaped with a view to Housing Pendle building houses or bungalows on the site.”
Housing Pendle said that interest in the flats is low because they are too small and out-dated and it not worth spending money to address the issues.
