A TURF Moor icon is looking to ‘get ahead’ by asking supporters to dream up new designs for his claret and blue bonce.
Every match day John Withington, of Rome Avenue, Burnley, dons a different pattern to cheer on the Clarets.
But after two seasons of plastering himself in the club’s traditional colours, and attracting worldwide attention, the 36-year-old is facing a black day.
After sporting checks, stripes, spots and being done up like a claret and blue ball he’s running short on inspiration.
John said: “I just wanted to appeal to the supporters to come up with some new designs. I have done all sorts over the past two seasons.
“It’s always got to be claret and blue but I am open to suggestions. Sometimes I do my own designs but if it is a bit more difficult then my wife Wendy helps out.”
So far his face-painting exploits have seen him receive letters and e-mails from Clarets aficionados as far afield as Germany, Spain and France.
And the Aussie Clarets supporters club was so taken with his efforts that they adopted him as a mascot.
John became involved with his matchdays motifs after his daughter Leeha, a pupil at Cherry Fold Primary School, was appointed as a cheerleader at Turf Moor a couple of years ago.
If he adopts a design, John will give the creative genius a full credit – on his head!
