DARWEN railway station could finally be on track for a revamp.

Campaigners have fought for a number of years to improve the station, on the Clitheroe-Manchester line.

Earlier this year it emerged that £500,000 set aside for the scheme was not going to be spent.

However, council bosses said they were now working with Network Rail to improve waiting facilities and CCTV and introduce ticket machines.

Recently, a temporary shelter was built over the platform to stop passengers getting soaked in the rain.

And in the near future, a new PA announcement system will be installed, along with an induction loop system for the hard of hearing.

Further improvements are being planned to ‘regenerate’ the whole station and platforms.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration, said: “There has been considerable growth in the number of passengers at Darwen Station over the last few years.

“And improved facilities are desperately needed in this town in particular.

“We are currently working with Network Rail to identify further improvements which may include improved waiting facilities, ticket machines and improved CCTV."

Keith Lumley, of Network Rail said: ‘‘We are currently in the very early stages with Blackburn with Darwen Council and we are working closely with them."
