Firefighters were called to a ground floor flat in Darwen this afternoon when a grill caught fire.
Two engines attended the scene in Ivinson Road at 2.50pm and officers spent around an hour tackling the incident.
A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We think the people living there have left something cooking on the grill and it has caught fire while they have gone out.
“The cooker was badly damaged and there was smoke damage to the kitchen.”
