A FORMER captain and president of Clitheroe Golf Club has died after a brave battle with cancer.

Michael Thompson, originally from Blackburn, who lived in Clayton-le-Moors with his wife Mary, was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago. He died in hospital on June 22, aged 74.

The former member of Blackburn Music Society worked at adhesive tape manufacturer Scapa Dryers Ltd until December 1987, holding a number of executive posts from company secretary to finance director. After leaving he joined Business Link East Lancashire.

He was also a member of the North West Society of Chartered Accountants Committee for 22 years. He was elected president In 1979 – one of only 21 district society presidents in England and Wales.

He was a member of Blackburn Rugby Club before taking up golf. In 1979 he was voted onto the council of the Clitheroe Golf Club and was treasurer for seven years.

He was club captain in its centenary year 1991 and president in 2005 and 2006, retiring from the committee in 2002. He was also a keen fund-raiser for the Blackburn Orphanage charity. He leaves his wife, children Ian and Janet and grandson James.
