WAR hero Sam Brearley was officially presented with his set of Second World War medals yesterday at an event in Ribble Valley Council Chamber in Clitheroe.

In May the 97-year-old great-grandfather, who lives in Whalley, revealed in the Lancashire Telegraph that he had never received his service medals.

He contacted the Ministry of Defence with the help of his carer Jane Parrington and was recognised for his efforts.

Mr Brearley, who is originally from Bacup, was captured in Greece in 1941 and held as a prisoner of war for four years.

Ne was handed six medals in an official ceremony attended by Peter Robinson, Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire; Councillor Lois Rimmer, Mayor of Ribble Valley; Councillor Alan Yearing, Mayor of Clitheroe; Lt Col Leanda Pitt and members of the Clitheroe Youth Forum.
