MOTORISTS had to slow down this afternoon when smoke from a grass fire swept across a road in Burnley.

Four boys were seen setting fire to a grass verge and a farmer's field next to Bacup Road at around 4pm.

A local farmer saw the incidents and alerted police and fire crews.

Burnley watch manager Mark Woodward said: “We are keen for the police to catch these youths and give them a fixed penalty notice for fire setting and also anti-social behaviour orders.

“It might seem like a small fire to them, but these can quickly spread to large areas of moorland, destroying livestock and wildlife habitat.”
