THE FIRST dedicated centre for homeless families in Blackburn with Darwen has been officially opened.

The £1.6million facility in Hollins Street, Blackburn, took in its first families in September but TV chef Nigel Haworth has now cut the ribbon.

Up to 10 families can be accommodated at any one time, with eight self-contained two-bedroom apartments, including one with disabled access and two-three bedroom apartments.

It has replaced the now-closed Police Street Hostel in Darwen, which was deemed unsuitable for families as it had shared living facilities.

Residents will receive support during their stay – which can be up to two years but is usually around six months - to improve their life skills to help them maintain a tenancy once they move into permanent accommodation.

Kevin Ruth, executive director of Twin Valley Homes, which built the centre in conjuction with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “For whatever reason, families find them-selves homeless and it is important that they have the opportunity of a secure and supportive environment to help them re-establish their credentials and secure a new home.

“We are proud to provide this opportunity at Hollin Street.”

Mr Howarth, star of the Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen and Market Kitchen, provided each household with some fresh fruit and vegetables along with some simple recipes to promote the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.

Families are referred to the service via the Social Services Department, and given priority on social houing.
