LIBERAL Democrat councillors say they have no immediate plans to shut Darwen Town Council if they take power.

The Lib Dems are rumoured to be considering a bid for control of the council at a forthcoming meeting, if all their councillors are present.

It comes after For Darwen lost control when Sudell ward member Martin McCaughran joined the Lib Dems.

For Darwen Party now has six councillors, Lib Dems have five, and Labour and Conservatives one each.

Many Lib Dems opposed the formation of the town council last year, claiming it would not be value for money for taxpayers.

Asked whether he planned a move for power, Lib Dem group leader Roy Davies said: “As the saying goes, you never know.

"As far as I am concerned, it’s still not being run properly.

“There are a lot of people who want to do good for Darwen, and they are not being allowed to.

"I am not in favour of the town council, and I think it’s still got to prove whether it can be beneficial or not.”
