YOUTHS threw a brick at a train as it travelled through Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station.
The 8pm Manchester Piccadilly to Clitheroe service was passing under the Moseley Road bridge when the brick struck a window.
Police Constable Chris Haughton said: “The thrown brick caused the outer skin of a passenger window to smash.
“Thankfully the inner skin remained intact and no-one was hurt, but this could have been a much more serious incident.
“Had the brick or broken glass struck someone on board the train we could have been dealing with an incident involving significant injuries.”
Three teenage boys were seen sitting on the bridge by the train driver, but had left the scene when British Transport Police (BTP) officers arrived.
PC Haughton added: “I cannot overstress the seriousness of this type of incident.
"Those responsible, perhaps without knowing it, have put lives at risk and BTP will do everything in its power to locate them and put them before the courts.
“Their actions were reckless, dangerous and totally unaccept-able and I appeal to anyone with information about the incident to come forward.”
The incident happened on June 11, but police have only just released details.
Call the BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or call Crimestoppers anony-mously on 0800 555 111 with information.
