COUNCILLORS in Padiham are hoping to get the decision to close the town’s recycling centre reviewed.
A request to have the decision ‘called in’ was submitted to Lancashire County Council last Friday.
The papers had been signed by five county councillors who are unhappy with the decision to shut the centre in Park Road.
Coun Jean Cunningham, the mayor of Padiham town council, has been collecting signatures for a petition in protest at the decision.
She said: “In just five hours earlier this week I collected around 700 signatures, and there’s also a standard letter to sign at the recycling centre and in some shops.
“This shows the strength of feeling in the area about this decision. People are really angry. We feel we haven’t been given fair consultation and this has just been pushed on to us.
“Hopefully we can get the decision reviewed and make them realise that Padiham needs the recycling centre.”
The decision to close the centre was taken following a task group report into Lancashire’s 23 recycling centres, and how to save money on them.
The Park Road centre currently deals with 3,800 tonnes of waste per year.
If the plans go ahead, the site will close in March next year, saving the county council £210,000 a year.
