A ROSSENDALE man is hoping his new book will be an education for anyone interested in becoming a private tutor.

Graham Woodward, of Churchtown Crescent, Bacup, has written a self-help book offering top tips and advice on how to get started in the business.

He has helped countless students over the past 18 years get through their exams and has decided to put all his knowledge into one comprehensive guide called ‘How to start a business as a private tutor’.

Graham, 62, has pledged to train up men and women as private tutors, who can visit youngsters in the borough to teach SATs, GCSEs and 11-plus materials on a one-to-one basis.

He said: “Despite the credit crunch, parents do not sacrifice their children’s education.

“I have never, ever exper-ienced a quiet spell because of a recession, or the state of the economy.

“Our generation has a duty to ensure that today’s children are educated to a good standard and schools are not enough.”

Graham, who currently tea-ches 25 children in the borough every week, became a private tutor 18 years ago after working as a draughtsman and a mana-ging director of a sports events company.

Last year a national survey showed that more than one in five teenagers at state secondary schools in England and Wales had had a private tutor to help them with their schoolwork.

The average cost for a private tutor, who must undergo Criminal Record Bureau checks (CRB) as they work with children, in Ross-endale is £19 per hour.
