POLICE have assured football fans they are free to wear their colours during the World Cup after rumours circulated that they were being banned.
Social networking websites have been full of chatter attacking the so-called ‘ban’ with one locally set up Facebook site called We Will Wear Our England Football Shirts attracting more than 3,600 members.
However, police maintain there has been no such action and that they were keen for all fans to enjoy the football.
Superintendent for Lancashire police's force operations, Peter O'Dwyer, said: “Where the confusion has arisen may be because various forces have sent out letters to licensed premises advising them on how to look after football supporters during key events.
“There is no ban. We just want people to enjoy the occasion and drink sensibly.”
