Alongside the Beatles, The Stones and The Animals, The Troggs were one of the pioneers of British music in the 1960’s, deliberately generating a sound that cut across the ‘sugary sweet’ pop scene of the time. And, like the aforementioned bands, the music inspired fans and bands for years afterwards – and the biggest tunes are showcased here.
The Troggs’ Greatest Hits features million-selling chart-toppers Wild Thing and With a Girl Like You in addition to top-ten hits such as I Can’t Control Myself and Anyway That You Want Me. Also highlighted on the album are eight tracks taken from the 1992 Athens Andover collaboration with R.E.M including Crazy Annie and Nowhere Road. Newsquest Northwest has joined forces with ppr publicity to promote this competition. Our lucky readers have the chance to win one of five copies of The Troggs’ Greatest Hits in this easy to enter giveaway.
Often cited as the original British garage band and led by colourful frontman and UFO enthusiast Reg Presley, The Troggs formed in 1964 and released their first single in 1965 after singing with Page One Records, owned and operated by Kinks manager Larry Page.
Credited as the inspiration for both garage and punk rock, The Troggs remain one the most influential bands in British music, inspiring the likes of R.E.M, MC5, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks and Jimi Hendrix, who of course made Wild Thing his own during his legendary Monterey Pop Festival performance where he set fire to his guitar.
Additionally, after an in-studio tape of Reg’s running commentary on a Troggs recording session filled with in-fighting and swearing surfaced, it was revealed that The Troggs Tapes served as the inspiration for a scene in the cult-classic rockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.
