A NEW flood alleviation scheme for Pendle Water has been opened by Gordon Prentice MP.
The area has had 21 recorded floods over the last 130 years but it is hoped the new scheme will protect around 500 properties.
The work includes the reconstruction of the wall to the rear of Sandy Lane while existing river walls upstream near Romney Avenue and Wilton Street have been repointed and grouted.
The Environment Agency has also increased the capacity of the river between Wilton Street and Clough Springs, improved access and defences next to Nelson and Colne College and carried out culvert repair works.
Gordon Prentice MP added: "I well remember some of the dreadful floods we have had in Newbridge and further downstream, causing homes to be evacuated.
"It was not so long ago that water was even lapping at the door of the College's Pendle Building.
The completion of this scheme will make houses and workplaces in the area much safer, and is wholly to be welcomed."
