ARRANGEMENTS for Burnley and Pendle's new super-schools are under way as students prepare to switch to their new homes.

Cabins for temporary accommodation for students at Habergham High School has peen put up ahead of the move to the new school being built as part of the £250million shake-up of secondary education.

The cabins will be used while the new Hameldon Community College is formed from the current student population of Ivy Bank Business and Enterprise College and Habergham High School.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "In order to enhance opportunities for existing pupils and minimise disruption and uncertainty for staff, parents and pupils, the new schools will be established from August, 2006, using existing premises and some temporary accommodation.

"Safeguarding children's education will be our number one priority during the period of transition. We are working closely with existing schools to compile a detailed plan that will ensure that the schools will have sufficient and appropriate space and that they suffer the minimum of disruption when moving schools."

From August 2006, Hameldon Community College will operate from Byron Street. By September, 2010, Hameldon Community College will be situated in new buildings on either Rossendale Road or Kiddrow Lane.

Shuttleworth College will be formed from the former Gawthorpe High School. From August it will operate from the Kiddrow Lane buildings (formerly home to Habergham Sixth Form). Some minor building alterations are being carried out at Kiddrow Lane together with the provision of a number of mobile classrooms. In August, 2008, the College will move to its new building at the current location of Gawthorpe High School.

Sir John Thursby Community College will be formed from the current student population of girls from Walshaw High School and boys from Barden High School. From August the college will operate from the current Walshaw site with some temporary cabins. The new college will be built on the existing site and will be ready for occupation in September, 2009. Blessed Trinity RC College will replace the current Catholic schools at St Hilda's and St Theodore's. The College will operate as a split site during the transition period from the St Hilda's site, the St Theodore's site, and the Kiddrow Lane site. The new college buildings will be available from September, 2010, on the existing St Theodore's Site.

Burnley Schools' Sixth Form will replace the school sixth forms currently at Habergham High School and St Theodore's Roman Catholic High School. The new Sixth Form will open in the Barden High School buildings which will have to be significantly remodelled to meet the accommodation needs of the Sixth Form students. The new Sixth Form centre and primary school and library facilities will be built on the existing Barden site and be ready for occupation in September 2008.

The controversial Unity College will be built on Towneley playing fields and until it is complete students will use Towneley and temporary cabins.

Cabins will also be used at Walton High School while the new Pendle Vale College is built in 2008 Marsden Heights Community College will be established from the student populations of Mansfield and Edge End High Schools and will operate from the split site. The new school buildings will be situated on the Benthead playing fields and will be ready in September 2009.

The £250million Building Schools for the Future projects will be the largest single investment ever made in Burnley and Pendle's education system.
