POLICE have closed the case into an alleged sex attack which was said to have taken place in a Burnley subway.
As reported in yesterday's Lancashire Evening Telegraph, a 13-year-old girl claimed she had been sexually assaulted by a teenage boy when she was in the Gannow Top underpass at 9.30pm on Wednesday.
The girl told police she had met the boy earlier that evening by the Derby Hotel, Padiham Road.
Detectives launched an investigation and after specially trained officers interviewed and examined the girl detectives said no incident took place.
Police today said they were trying contemplating if to take action against the girl and establish why she made up the allegation.
A police spokesman still urged genuine victims of sex crimes to come forward and said all reports would be thoroughly investigated.
She said: "All reports of sexual assault are taken extremely seriously by police which is why a full and thorough investigation was launched.
"However, on this occasion it appears that the attack reported to us by the teenager did not actually take place."
