Lancashire police will be tackling domestic abuse over the World Cup with a hard-hitting poster campaign.
Officers have revealed there can often be a link between large sporting competitions and a rise in incidents of domestic violence.
Now Operation Summer Nights, a scheme tackling crime over the summer months, will be targeting domestic abuse, with special training for officers.
Information packs have been handed out to officers, and all staff, from the phone operator who takes an emergency call on domestic violence to the police officer interviewing a victim, will be given advice.
And a poster featuring a man in a prison cell with the phrase They Think It's All Over, It Is Now' will be displayed in public places to raise awareness of the problem.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Bolton, the force lead on domestic abuse, said: "The Constabulary's positive action approach could prevent repeat victims of domestic abuse suffering during this World Cup competition.
"It is all about tackling the problem the first time it is reported so that the risk of more serious incidents occurring can be reduced."
DCI Bolton added: "The minds of all staff will be concentrated towards dealing with domestic abuse during the period of the World Cup.
"Increased consumption of alcohol unfortunately leads to increased violence behind closed doors.
"We are determined to deal with this by bringing the issue into the public domain once again.
"We would encourage anyone who is, or who knows of anyone being a victim of domestic abuse, to contact the police to receive the help and support they need at this time."
