The new police chief for Cumbria and Lancashire will be chosen in early September, Coun Malcolm Doherty has said.
Coun Doherty, chairman of the Lancashire Police Authority, made the announcement ahead of the forces' merger next spring.
The forces are joining in a bid to pool their resources and tackle serious crime and terrorism more effectively.
