MAJOR plans to transform Darwen have moved a step closer after the town gave its approval.
Details of the masterplan were sent to every home in the town in a bid to get feedback on what residents want to see developed.
There were three options for change minimal, moderate or major which ranged from minor street improvements to large retail and market developments.
And from 700 responses, 71 per cent backed major change favoured by Blackburn with Darwen Council. This would include: l Opening up the front of the Market Hall to create shop units.
l Linking the Market Square area with other parts of the town centre.
l New office developments in Parliament Street, Railway Road, Borough Road, Duckworth Street, Foundry Street and Knott Street.
l Improvements to The Circus and bus access.
l Railway station improvements.
l Housing redevelopment.
l Opening up the River Darwen through the town centre.
Ninety-one per cent said they would like to see the markets updated and 88 per cent were in favour of creating the heart of the centre in the market square.
Opening up the front of the town hall to provide shop units was only welcomed by 51 per cent but more said they would like to see new space for shops.
The markets were also supported in the consultation, with many saying the current three-day market was unattractive but there should be a three-day market within the new Market Square.
Other proposed changes which were welcomed were the opening up of the River Darwen and conserving Darwen's heritage and buildings.
An action plan is expected to be developed over the next few months following detailed site assessments while potential sources of funding and investment are identified.
Regeneration chief Coun Andy Kay said: "The people and businesses of Darwen have given a clear and strong message of support for the vision and the work of Darwen Town Centre Partnership.
"I would like to thank everyone who has participated and responded to the consultation.
"The response gives us the belief and confidence to take the masterplan forward to the next stage.
"We will continue to involve and listen to local people as the regeneration plans for Darwen develop."
