Former Genesis singer Ray Wilson is bringing his tour, The World Of Genesis, to Burnley on May 28. We spoke to him about his life in the limelight.

What inspired you to go into music?
I have a very musical family, with many relatives either playing an instrument or singing in a band. I was surrounded by music from an early age and I guess it rubbed off. I starting performing shows at high school when I was 14 and it has continued ever since. I'm 37 now.

What is your idea of happiness?
To be at peace comes first and everything falls into place from there. I try always to go with the heart and not the head and I try to do gigs as much as possible. I feel at home on stage.

What is your idea of hell?
Being deaf or dumb. I would struggle with that. Or having to listen to a Pet Shop Boys concert.

What's been the highlight of your career?
I've had a few. Being number one with Stiltskin, joining Genesis and best of all travelling the world as a solo artist. It's a great feeling to turn up in some far- off places and fill a hall with people who want to listen to my music.

What is your all-time favourite song and why?
Haven't got one in particular. I love the song Mama by Genesis and there are a few tracks by David Bowie that would be high on the list. Ashes to Ashes or Under Pressure perhaps.

What's the most rock'n'roll thing that's happened to you or that you've done?
I think having a fight with the Stiltskin guitarist live on MTV and then grabbing host Ray Cokes by the neck and singing Pretty Vacant in his ear.

Who is your all-time hero?
My mum.

What's the worst trouble you've been in?
I had a party when I was 15 in my aunt's house when she was on holiday. The house got trashed and the police were called as we were all totally drunk and causing grief for the neighbours. I spent the night in jail and it took me 12 months to pay for the damage.

What's the best piece of advice you've received?
Don't start taking drugs. A girl I dated at school died from heroin at 17.

What can people expect from your gig at Burnley Mechanics?
The show is a combination of songs from Genesis including tracks I wrote and performed with them on the Calling All Stations album and tour in 1998. It also includes tracks from Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins and a few songs from my solo career, including my number one Stiltskin track Inside. The show lasts just over two hours.
