COUNTY Councillor Wendy Dwyer has been chosen as deputy chairman of Lancashire County Council for the forthcoming year.

Coun Dwyer, who represents Accrington South, will support the work of new chairman Terry Burns during his year in office.

The posts of chairman and deputy chairman are similar to those of a mayor and deputy mayor, who represent Lancashire at events and functions.

Coun Dwyer said: "I'm delighted to have been chosen as deputy chairman and I'm looking forward to supporting Councillor Burns in his role as chairman.

"I first put myself forward for election in 1993, after many years tramping the streets in support of the party.

"I was amazed to win, but I've represented Accrington South ever since.

"I've always said that as politicians, we're not just here for the big things, but the small things as well.

"In fact, anything that could improve the lives of Lancashire residents."

Coun Dwyer and her husband, Michael, who live in Accrington, have five children and three grandchildren.

Born in Stretford, she spent her childhood in the area close to Old Trafford cricket ground.

She met husband Michael when her family moved to Accrington.

She worked as a legal cashier in various local solicitors' offices, before becoming a county councillor.

Coun Dwyer was previously chairman of the county council's external overview and scrutiny committee.

She is also a member of the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board, which works to attract visitors to the area.
