ONE of Accrington's most popular festivals has been saved after a funding crisis put its future in doubt.

More than 5,000 people attended last year's Mela and Community Festival in Oakhill Park.

But after funds from the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal initiative were withdrawn last month it was feared the event would fold.

Organisers have now found the £10,000 they need to put on the event, which will take place in August.

Gayle Knight, from Mid Pennine Arts, said: "It would have been such a shame if the event had not gone ahead, everyone enjoyed last year so much.

"It was looking doubtful but the committee were reluctant to abandon an event that has grown in popularity over the years.

"It's important to ensure that this event continues and we're pleased that we've managed to secure some funding for it.

"Events like this help to show what a great place Accrington is and have to continue."

She said that organisers had searched hard to find the cash needed and have secured the funding from the Local Network Fund, a national grant-giving organisation.

Around £7,000 has come from the LNF and the remaining £3,000 has come from Mid Pennine Arts and East Lancashire Together, an initiative committed to finding positive ways of bringing together communities into Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Rossendale, along with local donations.

The festival has been running for six years and this year will feature the usual mix of live music, funfair, performers and arts and crafts.

Ms Knight added: "More than 5,000 people came last year and enjoyed a fantastic community and family focused event.

"It's especially important this year as there is a year-long festival of Muslim cultures, which is working to show how barriers, misconceptions or ignorance can be broken down through use of culture and the arts."

The festival will now take place on Sunday, August 6.
