BURNLEY union official Terry Burns has been appointed as the new chairman of Lancashire County Council.

County Coun Burns, who represents Burnley North East, will be Lancashire's 40th chairman since 1889 and the second youngest male holder of the post.

During his year in office, Terry said he hoped to raise awareness of the county's aerospace industry and encourage positive images of young people.

He said: "Within Lancashire, for many years we've had a first-class aerospace industry.

"It's something I still feel very proud to have been part of.

"I hope to use my year as chairman to raise awareness of its achievements.

"In addition, I'd like to continue building links between the county's many diverse communities.

"In particular, the role of our young people and how they're perceived.

"My predecessor, Councillor Bob Wilkinson, has been a wonderful ambassador for Lancashire and I hope to bring similar qualities to the role of chairman."

Burnley-born Terry, 48, is married to Wendy, and they have three sons: Gary, Daniel and Elliott.

In addition to his role as a county councillor, Terry is also a regional officer for the Amicus, the union based in Prestwich, Manchester. He was a Burnley borough councillor for six years before joining the county council.
