a man who died after being struck by a train in Oswaldtwistle has been named as Christopher Reynolds, of Church.

Mr Reynolds, 32, of Queen's Road West, was killed on the tracks near Church and Oswaldtwistle station on Monday morning.

Today neighbours said they were shocked to discover Mr Reynolds had died and paid tribute to a "quiet and friendly man".

One neighbour on the street, near St Christopher's High School, said: "We always saw him about and he was very friendly. It is a shock."

Investigators were initially unable to identify his body and were forced to resort to using fingerprint analysis.

Officers from the Transport Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident and an inquest has now been opened into Mr Reynolds' death.

A stretch of the line was closed for more than an hour on Monday as investigations were completed the scene.

Assistant deputy coroner Andre Rebello said the Blackpool South to Colne train had been approaching the station when the driver spotted a man at the side of the tracks.

The driver had approached a curve at 60mph, breaking to 50mph when he saw Mr Reynolds.

Mr Rebello said: "His arms were outstretched to his side. The driver sounded a horn and engaged the emergency brake and there was no attempt by the man to avoid the train. The driver heard the impact."

The collision happened around three quarters of a mile from the station in the direction of Blackburn, on a canal bridge near Blackburn Road.

The body has been released by the coroner for a funeral, and the inquest was adjourned until August 9.
